I am delighted to write in enthusiastic support of Michael Chen’s application to Summit University. Over the past three years I have taught Michael Advanced Placement Chemistry and served as faculty advisor for the Science Olympiad team he captains. Without reservation, I rank him among the top five students I have encountered in my twenty-two years at Brighton High School.

Michael’s intellectual curiosity is immediately evident. During our unit on thermodynamics, he independently derived the Gibbs free-energy equation and then designed a calorimetry experiment that measured the energy content of biofuels, ultimately presenting his findings at the Oregon Junior Science Symposium where he earned second place. His lab reports are graduate-level in thoroughness; last semester his analysis of reaction kinetics was selected by the district as an exemplar for training new AP teachers.

Equally impressive is Michael’s leadership. As captain of the Science Olympiad team, he expanded membership from 12 to 38 students and instituted peer-mentoring sessions that raised our regional ranking from seventh to first. When a teammate’s family faced housing insecurity, Michael organized a weekend tutoring fundraiser that covered two months of rent. His quiet integrity has earned him the nickname “Mayor of the Lab” from peers who instinctively look to him for guidance.

Michael also contributes beyond STEM. He plays varsity violin in our chamber orchestra, volunteered 120 hours last summer at Portland Community Free Clinic translating for Mandarin-speaking patients, and still managed to maintain a 4.00 unweighted GPA while completing eleven AP courses. This fall he independently petitioned the district to add Multivariable Calculus, then tutored classmates who had exhausted the standard math sequence.

Compared to the 1,200 students I have taught, Michael stands in the 99th percentile for analytical ability, the 98th percentile for creativity, and the 100th percentile for ethical character. I have no doubt he will arrive at Summit University ready to advance the frontiers of renewable-energy research he frequently discusses with me.
